Today is the International Earth Day Celebration. In 2020, 4.5 billion human beings stay at home because of the spread of the Covid-19. Since the beginning of the lockdown around the world, we observe that animals are wandering more and more around the cities. Nature breathes better. What about Guadeloupe?

According to Gwad’ air, the Approved Air Quality Monitoring Association in Guadeloupe (French West Indies), the air quality is better in the island in March 2020, compared to March 2019. Thanks to the lockdown, the local residents are less exposed to car pollution on highways.

The bad news is that sargassum is back in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe. Christian BAPTISTE, the Mayor of the town has already organized the collection of the brown algae, so as to protect the coastline and the population.

A celebration online

This year, International Earth Day can not be celebrated as usual. Environemental activists, environmental non-profit organisations and citizens concerned about their environment can meet online. The Earth Day Live 2020, takes place over three days, from April 22nd to 24th, around meetings, video messages and live music performances.

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22nd, 1970. The event was founded by Gaylord Nelson, an American senator, who encouraged the students to set up environmental awareness projects in their communities. Nowadays, it is recognized as the most important popular environmental event in the world. Generally speaking, it is celebrated worlwide by more than 500 million people in 184 countries.
